A fatal apartment fire in neighboring Sunnyvale left one person dead and four residential units affected on Sunday afternoon, as Hoodline reported.
Public safety officers were dispatched to an apartment building at 1235 Wildwood Avenue around 12:30 p.m. following multiple reports of a fire breaking out. Upon arriving at the scene, emergency responders discovered that one unit was fully engulfed in flames, while three surrounding units were being directly impacted by the smoke and fire.
Officers from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety immediately initiated evacuations for residents living inside the building, including those residing in the four impacted units. Emergency crews worked quickly at the scene and managed to bring the flames under control within 40 minutes of arrival.
According to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, firefighters found one person deceased inside the specific apartment unit where the fire originally broke out. Official details regarding the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the resident's death have not yet been released, as both matters remain under active investigation by public safety personnel. Officials noted that no additional information was immediately available.
The response effort relied on regional cooperation among neighboring emergency services. The Santa Clara County Fire Department and the Mountain View Fire Department provided critical mutual aid alongside Sunnyvale crews. This joint assistance helped public safety personnel contain the blaze and stop the flames from spreading further through the residential structure.
Sunday's fatal incident marks at least the second apartment blaze to occur in Sunnyvale during 2026. Earlier this year in January, a two-alarm fire swept through a residential complex located in the 1600 block of Kirkland Drive. That morning fire was reported at 10:43 a.m. on a Tuesday, with emergency authorities arriving at the scene within four minutes of the call.
The January fire on Kirkland Drive forced approximately two dozen residents from their homes. While three of the complex's eight total units suffered significant smoke and fire damage, the entire building sustained overall damage. No injuries were reported in connection with that earlier incident, and the American Red Cross stepped in to provide emergency assistance to the displaced residents.
The city of Sunnyvale has experienced other significant apartment fires in prior years as well. Media outlets including KTVU and NBC Bay Area previously covered separate fire emergencies in the community. NBC Bay Area reported on a distinct three-alarm fire that occurred on the morning of October 28, 2009, which resulted in the displacement of between 25 and 30 local residents.
As of now, local authorities have not released further details regarding the Sunday afternoon fire on Wildwood Avenue. The identity of the individual who died in the blaze has not been publicly disclosed, and officials have not confirmed what sparked the initial flames. Investigators have not provided a timeline for when they expect to determine the exact cause of the fire.
