The San José Police Department (SJPD) has opened a new 11,000-square-foot hangar for its Air Support Unit, a project funded through the city's Measure T bond program. This facility is described by the department as a long-awaited upgrade for the unit's operations.

The new hangar will accommodate the unit's AIR3 helicopter and a new fixed-wing aircraft, which is expected to enter full service in the near future. The SJPD noted in a statement that the facility \"marks another significant investment in San José's public safety infrastructure through Measure T, continuing the City's work to modernize facilities that meet the evolving\" needs of the department.

The Air Support Unit's primary role extends beyond patrol to provide aerial services for both the SJPD and other agencies across Santa Clara County. Its main objective is to support ground officers, focusing on public and officer safety. Key tasks include pursuits, apprehending fleeing suspects, and searching for missing persons considered \"at risk.\"

The unit currently operates an Airbus AS-350 helicopter, known as AIR3, staffed by one sergeant, two officer pilots, and two officer tactical observers. AIR3 typically flies seven days a week when it is not undergoing maintenance.

City officials highlight the new hangar as an infrastructure priority based on the unit's impact. In 2023, AIR3 was responsible for the recovery of approximately one-third of San José's reported stolen vehicles that resulted in an arrest. The following year, AIR3 responded to 898 calls for service, which included assistance provided to outside law enforcement agencies and the San Jose Fire Department.

The unit's mutual-aid capabilities have been demonstrated in past events. On August 10, 2024, AIR3 assisted the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office in rescuing a stranded and injured hiker. The aircraft is trained and certified to conduct short-haul rescues. The unit's 2022 operations manual outlines its broad mission, which includes providing aerial support and expertise for the Bureau of Field Operations, the Bureau of Investigations, and various administrative and city-government needs, using both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

Unit flights are subject to regulation, with normal operations required to comply with existing department policies and Federal Aviation Regulations. The SJPD classifies AIR3 as a Public Aircraft Operation used specifically for law-enforcement purposes.

This is not the first upgrade for the unit. In 2018, the SJPD replaced its previous helicopter, Air2, with the current AIR3 aircraft, a change that expanded the unit's capabilities to include cliff-side rescue operations and water drops on wildfires.

The funding for the new hangar comes from Measure T, a 2018 ballot measure that authorized the City of San José to issue up to $650 million in general-obligation bonds. These bonds were designated to finance disaster preparedness, public safety, and infrastructure projects. Public safety has been a consistent beneficiary of these funds, with Measure T recommendations including allocations for police station construction, patrol unit funding, and upgrades for police headquarters.

Other cities, such as Burbank/Glendale in Southern California, have also invested in dedicated police aviation facilities. San José's new 11,000-square-foot facility aligns with this approach, providing a modern and permanent base to support reliable air operations for regional public safety. The SJPD has not yet provided specific details regarding the hangar's exact location, construction cost, or a precise completion timeline beyond its announcement. The department frames the project as an investment aimed at ensuring its aircraft and crew continue to provide aerial oversight for San José for years into the future.

The department announced it had opened an 11,000-square-foot hangar for its Air Support Unit, calling the project a long-awaited upgrade funded through the city's Measure T bond program.\\n\\n“Today we celebrated the opening of the long-awaited new home for our SJPD Air Support Unit,” the department wrote in a statement posted to X, adding that the facility “marks another significant investment in San José's public safety infrastructure through Measure T, continuing the City's work to modernize facilities that meet the evolving” needs of the department, according to the San Jose Police Dept\\n\\n. The new hangar will accommodate the unit's AIR3 helicopter as well as a new fixed-wing aircraft that is expected to enter full service soon, per the department's announcement.\\n\\nThe Air Support Unit's job is broader than just chasing down suspects from above. According to the San Jose Police Department, the unit's primary purpose is to provide aerial services not just for SJPD but for other agencies across Santa Clara County, with a main objective of supporting ground officers on matters of public and officer safety.\\n\\nThe department's page notes that an emphasis is placed on pursuits, apprehending fleeing suspects and searching for missing persons considered “at risk.” The unit currently flies an Airbus AS-350, staffed by one sergeant, two officer pilots and two officer tactical observers, and the helicopter known as AIR-3 normally flies seven days a week when it isn't down for maintenance, the department's page states.\\n\\nThe unit's numbers help explain why city officials frame the new hangar as an infrastructure priority rather than a cosmetic upgrade. In 2023, AIR 3 was responsible for recovering roughly a third of San José's reported stolen vehicles that resulted in an arrest, the department has said. The following year, the department reported that AIR 3 had responded to 898 calls for service, a tally that included assists to outside law-enforcement agencies and the San Jose Fire Department.\\n\\nThat mutual-aid role has played out in dramatic fashion before. On August 10, 2024, AIR 3 assisted the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office in rescuing a stranded and injured hiker, the department reported, noting that the aircraft is trained and certified to conduct short-haul rescues. The unit's 2022 operations manual describes its mission even more broadly, stating that it provides aerial support and expertise for the Bureau of Field Operations, the Bureau of Investigations, and administrative and city-government needs, using both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.\\n\\nEven with its wide mission, the unit's flights are not unregulated. The operations manual specifies that normal operations must comply with existing department policies as well as Federal Aviation Regulations. SJPD also classifies AIR3 as a Public Aircraft Operation used for law-enforcement purposes, according to the department's special operations page.\\n\\nThis isn't the first time the unit has upgraded its equipment. Back in 2018, SJPD replaced its previous helicopter, Air2, with the current AIR3 aircraft, a move the Mercury News reported at the time could expand the unit's capabilities to include cliff-side rescue operations and water drops on wildfires.\\n\\nThe new hangar's funding traces back to a 2018 ballot measure. Measure T authorized the City of San José to issue up to $650 million in general-obligation bonds to finance disaster preparedness, public safety and infrastructure projects, according to the City of San José. Public safety has been a recurring beneficiary of those bond dollars: San Jose Spotlight has reported that Measure T recommendations have included money to cover potential construction cost increases for four stations, funding for a patrol unit to occupy a police station, and more than $2.2 million for a police-headquarters upgrade.\\n\\nOther cities have made similar bets on dedicated police aviation facilities. In nearby Southern California, the Burbank/Glendale Police Air Support Facility opened as a permanent base featuring a 13,300-square-foot hangar, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times. San José's new facility, while smaller at 11,000 square feet, follows that same logic: a fixed, modern home base built to keep a regional air unit flying reliably.\\n\\nFor now, SJPD has not detailed the hangar's exact location, construction cost or completion timeline beyond the announcement itself. What the department has made clear is its framing of the project: an investment meant to keep its aircraft, and the officers and tactical observers who crew them, watching over San José from above for years to come.\\n\\\"\\\"\\\"\\n\\nFAITHFUL-DERIVATION RULES (hard):\\n- Report ONLY what the source material above supports. A man died after he was struck by a motorcycle while crossing a street in San Jose over the weekend, police reported Tuesday. The fatal crash happened around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. According to the San Jose Police Department, the collision occurred near the intersection of South Bascom and Fruitdale avenues. This incident marks the city's 20th pedestrian death this year, a significant figure in local traffic safety. It also represents the 42nd fatal collision recorded in San Jose so far this year.

Both the pedestrian and the man riding the motorcycle were transported to the hospital following the crash, police said. Authorities noted that both individuals had sustained life-threatening injuries during the collision. While the driver of the motorcycle was stabilized at the hospital, the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries. The San Jose Police Department did not release specific details regarding when exactly the man died after being admitted.

Police have not yet provided information about the circumstances that led to the crash itself. This includes any specifics on how the collision between the pedestrian and the motorcycle unfolded. Additionally, authorities did not specify whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident. Such details remain unreleased by the department as of their Tuesday statement.

The city's current count of traffic fatalities shows an increase compared to previous data. According to the city’s crash dashboard, the 42nd fatal collision this year marks an uptick from 40 reported traffic fatalities in San Jose in 2025. Proposition 45 is on the statewide ballot, proposing changes to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) to speed up housing construction and other essential projects. While supporters say the measure will clear the way for more homes, pro-housing advocates across California are divided, primarily over concerns about where new development would occur.

The central point of disagreement among these groups is whether to prioritize building within existing urban areas, known as infill development, or to enable more low-density housing at the edge of metro areas, which is often termed sprawl. Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, an Oakland Democrat and a consistent advocate for housing development, supports Proposition 45. She has stated she is an “all of the above” person when it comes to housing, indicating support for diverse housing types. The majority of the building industry, including both for-profit and non-profit developers, also backs the measure.

Conversely, some organizations that typically align with Assemblymember Wicks, such as Bay Area housing advocates Eastbay for Everyone and the Greenbelt Alliance, are strongly opposed to Proposition 45. Max Dubler of California YIMBY, whose organization has adopted a neutral stance, raised concerns about the measure potentially making it easier to construct “car-dependent sprawl housing and the freeways and water infrastructure necessary to serve that sprawl.” While acknowledging that some exurban growth is necessary to address the housing shortage, he emphasized the importance of considering the nature of such development.

Many key pro-housing organizations, including Abundant Housing Los Angeles, SPUR, and the primary advocacy groups California YIMBY and YIMBY Action, have taken neutral positions on the proposition. Ali Sapirman, an advocacy manager at the Housing Action Coalition, which supports the measure, observed that \"The housing community has been a little bit fractured\" by the campaign. This division is not over the need for more housing but rather the fundamental question of its location.

For nearly a decade, the Legislature has passed numerous bills designed to streamline the regulatory approval process for new construction. Most of these laws have focused specifically on projects in areas where existing homes and infrastructure are already present, emphasizing infill development. This approach successfully brought together a coalition of developers, construction labor unions, and a variety of Democratic-leaning advocates. These included climate activists seeking reduced commuter traffic, transit and pedestrian advocates desiring more public transportation users and walkers, and urbanists aiming for denser urban environments. Proposition 45, by extending its scope to include projects at the metropolitan fringe, is creating a split within this established coalition.

Jordan Grimes, legislative director with Greenbelt Alliance, which opposes the measure, described Proposition 45 as “a doubling down on essentially 75 years of land-use patterns that we know haven’t worked.” He characterized it as a “return to the sprawl era.”

Proposition 45 would not exempt projects from environmental review. Instead, for projects designated as “essential,” it would narrow the scope of these reviews and mandate their completion within 365 business days. Any resulting lawsuits would also face a deadline, requiring judges to resolve them within 270 business days, and these lawsuits would be made harder to sustain in court. Beyond housing, essential projects encompass roads, hospitals, schools, clean energy initiatives, and water and broadband infrastructure. The Yes on 45 campaign has highlighted support from affordable housing developers and advocates, linking the measure to efforts to improve housing affordability.

Proponents argue that CEQA, which requires public agencies to assess the potential environmental effects of their decisions, allows project opponents to easily cause delays. Linda Mandolini of Eden Housing, an affordable housing developer, noted that under current rules, “The clock is endless and the number of people and entities who can challenge you are also endless.”

However, opponents argue that recent legislative actions have already addressed many of CEQA’s challenges for urban housing projects. They cite Assembly Bill 130, authored by Assemblymember Wicks and enacted last year, which exempted most infill housing from CEQA. Since its implementation in July 2025, this measure has led to the entitlement of 17,913 housing units, according to the Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation, a state agency. Grimes contends that for urban housing, “When you look at what’s left to do on urban housing, there are absolutely still barriers… CEQA just isn’t one of them” anymore. He stated that the No on 45 campaign aims to persuade voters that the issue of CEQA delays for urban housing has largely been resolved.

Many developers and affordable housing advocates, including those operating in urban areas, dispute that CEQA is no longer a significant impediment. They point out that last year’s exemption does not apply to projects exceeding 20 acres, meaning larger urban redevelopment projects still undergo the older, more extensive review process. Additionally, Proposition 45 would introduce time limits for other permits issued later in the development process, which often contribute more to project delays than the initial environmental review. Mandolini stressed that imposing time limits on lawsuits could be crucial for a project’s success, preventing it from being “delayed to death.” She cited Eden Housing’s planned 130-unit affordable housing project in the Bay Area suburb of Livermore, which has been stalled since 2018 due to a lawsuit.

Environmental justice groups and their allies also oppose Proposition 45. They reject the premise that CEQA requires fixing, even though the measure aims to shorten and restrict the review process rather than granting outright exemptions. These groups have long countered the argument that CEQA is a primary cause of the state’s housing challenges.

The debate surrounding Proposition 45 has escalated a regional disagreement over development patterns into a statewide discussion, echoing earlier divisions concerning large-scale projects like a proposed new city on Solano County farmland.

Supporters say it would, among other things, overhaul that law, known as the California Environmental Quality Act, or CEQA, to clear the way for — you guessed it — more housing construction.\\n\\nAssemblymember Buffy Wicks, an Oakland Democrat and one of the movement’s most stalwart champions in the Legislature, is for it. So is the bulk of the building industry, including many major for- and non-profit developers.\\n\\nBay Area pro-housing advocates Eastbay for Everyone and the Greenbelt Alliance, two typical allies of Wicks, are emphatically against it.\\n\\nIn the uncommitted middle lies the lion’s share of California YIMBYism: Abundant Housing Los Angeles, SPUR, and both California YIMBY and YIMBY Action — the movement’s two flagship advocacy organizations — have all taken neutral positions.\\n\\n“It’s been a weird campaign so far,” said Ali Sapirman, advocacy manager at the Housing Action Coalition, an urban building industry group that supports the measure. “The housing community has been a little bit fractured.”\\n\\nThose fissures aren’t over whether more homes should be built across California. Instead, it mostly boils down to a question of where.\\n\\n“The central question here is how you feel about sprawl,” Max Dubler of California YIMBY wrote in the group’s non-endorsement statement, referring to low-density housing development at the edge of metro areas. Though some exurban growth “will necessarily be part of solving our housing shortage,” he expressed concern about making it easier to build “car-dependent sprawl housing and the freeways and water infrastructure necessary to serve that sprawl.”\\n\\nFor nearly a decade, the Legislature has been on a tear, passing “streamlining” bills aimed at speeding up the regulatory approval of new construction. Almost all of those laws have only applied to projects in places where homes and other infrastructure already exist.\\n\\nPrioritizing so-called infill development helped wrangle together a coalition of developers and construction labor unions, but also a diverse swath of Democratic-leaning advocates whose interest in seeing more apartments and condos goes beyond the cause of affordability alone. That includes climate activists who want to see less commuter car traffic; transit, bicycle and pedestrian advocates who want more riders and walkers and urbanists who want Los Angeles to more closely resemble Barcelona.\\n\\nIn breaking from that urban focus, Prop. 45 is driving a wedge inside that coalition.\\n\\nIf passed, the measure would speed up the review process required under CEQA (pronounced “see-kwah”) for all types of housing projects. That includes transit-adjacent downtown condo towers, but also freshly paved subdivisions at the metropolitan fringe.\\n\\nThe measure is “a doubling down on essentially 75 years of land-use patterns that we know haven’t worked,” said Jordan Grimes, legislative director with Greenbelt Alliance, which opposes the measure. “It’s a return to the sprawl era.”\\n\\nNot everyone in the movement necessarily sees that as a bad thing. Among those who want California to build its way out of its current housing shortage, opinions differ over whether more environmentally-friendly infill development alone is up to the task.\\n\\n“I’m an ‘all of the above’ person when it comes to housing,” said Wicks, explaining her support of the measure. “I think we need housing of all different types, shapes, and sizes.”\\n\\nAn earlier version of this rift first emerged earlier this decade when a handful of Bay Area tech investors announced plans to build a brand new city on Solano County farmland in 2023 under the banner of California Forever. Some YIMBY commentators applauded the plan as a welcome injection of much-needed supply. Others decried it as sprawl dressed in urbanist clothing.\\n\\nWith Prop. 45, that regional debate is now playing out at a statewide scale.\\n\\nProp. 45 is about much more than housing policy.\\n\\nCEQA requires public agencies to review the possible environmental consequences of the decisions they make, including the permitting of private projects. For decades industry groups, developers and, more recently, housing supply boosters have said the law makes it too easy for project opponents to jam up worthwhile projects by repeatedly demanding additional analysis.\\n\\n“The clock is endless and the number of people and entities who can challenge you are also endless,” said Linda Mandolini of Eden Housing, an affordable housing developer.\\n\\nProp. 45 would not exempt any projects from environmental review outright. But for projects deemed “essential,” it would narrow the focus of these reviews and require them to wrap up within 365 business days. Any resulting litigation would also face a shot clock; Judges would have 270 business days to resolve them. Such lawsuits would also be made harder to sustain in court. Aside from housing, essential projects include roads, hospitals, schools, clean energy projects, water and broadband infrastructure.\\n\\nBut housing has loomed large in the electoral debate. The Yes on 45 campaign has touted the support of affordable housing developers and housing advocates, while pointing to housing affordability concerns as the initial impetus for the measure.\\n\\nIt’s easy to see why. Environmental challenges to often innocuous-seeming housing projects have regularly generated headlines for years, helping to cement the idea among lawmakers and many voters that CEQA is a major cause of the state’s housing woes.\\n\\nEnvironmental justice groups and their allies have spent years fighting against that argument in the Legislature. Though Prop. 45 does not exempt “essential” projects from environmental review outright — it just shortens and hems in the process — these groups have now lined up to oppose it for much the same reason: They reject the premise that CEQA needs fixing.\\n\\nBut for opponents like Grimes, who supported many recent streamlining bills, the argument that the law is holding up desperately needed residential construction is a year out of date. Last year, the governor signed Assembly Bill 130, a Wicks-authored measure that exempted most infill housing from the CEQA.\\n\\nSince becoming law in July 2025, developers have used it to entitle 17,913 units of housing, according to the Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation, a state agency.\\n\\n“When you look at what’s left to do on urban housing, there are absolutely still barriers,” said Grimes, whose organization applauded last year’s exemption. “CEQA just isn’t one of them.”\\n\\nThe task of the No on 45 campaign, he said, is to convince enough voters that “we’ve actually solved this problem.”\\n\\nMany developers and affordable housing advocates, even those working in urban areas, dispute that CEQA is no longer a major obstacle.\\n\\nLast year’s exemption does not exempt projects larger than 20 acres, which means supersized urban redevelopment projects are still subject to the old process.\\n\\nProp. 45 also applies shot clocks to other permits issued later in the development process and which regularly slow a project more than environmental review.\\n\\nAnd while state laws like last year’s infill carveout may grant certain developers the right to ignore CEQA, there is nothing to stop a deep-pocketed opponent from suing anyway. Putting time limits on those lawsuits could be the difference between a project succeeding and being delayed to death, said Mandolini.\\n\\nShe points to the planned 130-unit affordable housing project that Eden Housing has been trying to and failing to build in the Bay Area suburb of Livermore since 2018 as an example. In 2021, a nonprofit funded by a handful of well-heeled Livermore residents sued the city, arguing that it hadn’t done enough environmental analysis on a housing development that would be built \\n\\\"\\\"\\\"\\n\\nFAITHFUL-DERIVATION RULES (hard):\\n- Report ONLY what the source material above supports. San José’s downtown park and plaza, previously named for Cesar Chavez, will now be known as Plaza de San José. The City Council made this decision with a unanimous vote on Tuesday afternoon, concluding a more than six-month process.

The new name, Plaza de San José, was the top choice in a ranked-choice survey presented to residents during the summer. Over 10,500 people responded to the survey, and Plaza de San José received more first-choice votes than the second and third-place options combined, according to city reports.

Councilmember Anthony Tordillos, who represents the downtown area, commented during the meeting that the community's preference for Plaza de San José was clear \"by a fairly resounding margin.\" Tordillos noted that the name reflects the park's central role in the city's civic history as the oldest public space in Northern California. He also highlighted its past as the site of California's first State Capitol and an early city hall, and its connection to the Spanish and Mexican heritage in San José's history.

Mayor Matt Mahan called the outcome a \"positive result\" and thanked city staff for skillfully managing what he described as an \"unexpected and sensitive situation\" that proved difficult for residents.

This decision marks the end of a months-long public engagement effort that included community meetings, listening sessions, surveys, and voting. The renaming process began following allegations of sexual abuse against Cesar Chavez, a figure long recognized for his work in labor rights. A New York Times report in March detailed these alleged abuses, including against Dolores Huerta, with whom Chavez co-founded the United Farm Workers union. These revelations led cities and districts across the state to re-evaluate streets, parks, schools, and other landmarks named in his honor.

While the City Council ultimately chose Plaza de San José based on widespread community support, some residents and Parks and Recreation commissioners had advocated for alternative names. Earlier this month, the Parks and Recreation commission, after reviewing community input, suggested Plaza del Pueblo de San José, a combination of two options from public surveys. Commissioner Daisy Barocio expressed that Plaza de San José lacked \"richness\" and felt \"very plain and safe.\"

Misrayn Mendoza from the community group Amigos de Guadalupe, along with others, called into Tuesday’s council meeting to propose Plaza de los Inmigrantes, or Immigrants Plaza, citing that immigrants make up over 40% of the city’s population. Mendoza argued that the city should not \"take the easy way out and name it just the Plaza of San José.\"

Earlier community meetings and surveys gathered more than 600 potential name suggestions from residents and local organizations. City staff then narrowed these down to five options, based on frequency of suggestion and adherence to existing city criteria for park names. These five options were then presented in the ranked-choice voting survey.

Following Plaza de San José as the top choice, the survey results showed Farmworkers Plaza as the second preferred choice, Plaza del Pueblo as third, followed by Plaza Park and Plaza de Quetzalcoatl. City staff indicated that the park renaming work will be put out to bid later this year, with a contract expected to be finalized in the spring.

Councilmember Tordillos expressed that the broad community support for Plaza de San José \"will really set up this next era for the plaza well\" and help the city begin this new chapter on a positive note. He added that the new name will reinforce that the park \"belongs to the people of San José and where everyone in our community is welcome.\"

East San Jose residents and elected officials are renewing calls to close Reid-Hillview Airport after two recent airplane crashes stemming from the facility. Community advocacy group SOMOS Mayfair organized a news conference at Hillview Park on Friday, where residents shared their concerns. The incidents included an Oct. 16 crash due to a landing equipment issue at the airport and another on Oct. 17 on Capitol Expressway, which injured three people aboard a small plane that had taken off from Reid-Hillview.

These events have intensified long-standing concerns within a neighborhood where residents have advocated for years to close the county-owned airport. The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors voted in 2020 to begin planning for the airport's closure and repurposing of its property. However, federal obligations mean that 2031 is the earliest possible closure date.

Dilza Gonzalez, an East San Jose resident and organizer with SOMOS Mayfair, stated at the news conference that families are still waiting for answers about what will happen between now and the planned closure. Maria Reyes, who has lived about a block and a half from the airport for 55 years, has spent more than two decades advocating for its closure. She envisions the 179-acre property being replaced by a community center, more green space, and areas for children to play.

Reyes and Gonzalez also highlighted the airport’s potential negative health effects, including aircraft noise and lead exposure. Santa Clara County previously restricted the use of leaded aviation fuel at its airports in 2021, following concerns about children’s exposure to lead near Reid-Hillview. Despite this, Reyes noted observations of \"brown clouds\" due to continuous airplane traffic. She also noted that beyond the crashes, the continuous noise from planes is a significant concern.

Community advocates are urging county officials to implement immediate measures to protect families while the airport remains operational. A 2022 analysis of federal data found Reid-Hillview had 11 crashes over the previous decade, though its crash total was not higher than that of some comparable California airports. Alum Rock Union School District Trustee Corina Herrera-Loera stressed that 2031 marks a deadline for closure, but not for ensuring the protection of children and families.

District 2 County Supervisor Betty Duong, who represents East San Jose, confirmed that the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the Oct. 17 crash on Capitol Expressway. She noted that the county has not yet received findings from either agency and that the transportation safety board would communicate immediately if critical issues within the county’s purview needed addressing. San Jose State University spokesperson Michelle Smith McDonald clarified that the plane involved in the Oct. 17 crash was owned and operated by Flying20, an independent flying club that includes some university alumni, employees, and students but is not operated by the university. SJSU was not aware of anyone affiliated with the university being aboard the aircraft. Scott Riddle, interim director of Santa Clara County Airports, was not available for comment.

Meanwhile, the county has moved into the next phase of planning for the airport property’s future. Supervisor Duong stated that county officials are finalizing bids to hire a vendor who will develop cost estimates and identify potential barriers and opportunities for projects outlined in the 2020 Reid-Hillview Vision Plan. Duong mentioned that her predecessor, former Supervisor Cindy Chavez, earmarked approximately $300,000 for this planning process, and residents will continue to provide input, though not every proposed project is expected to move forward.

Reyes also shared that residents have experienced health problems, such as cancer, depression, and other medical issues, which they worry may be connected to conditions in the neighborhood. These concerns align with broader health disparities affecting Latino residents in Santa Clara County, many of whom reside in East San Jose and South County. A 2025 county health assessment documented disparities in areas including mental health and life expectancy, leading the board of supervisors to declare a public health crisis for Latino residents. This assessment examined broader health needs and did not establish that the airport caused the specific health problems. Reyes conveyed the community’s sentiment, stating, \"My community doesn’t want promises anymore. We want action.\"

They pointed to a crash from a landing equipment issue at the airport Oct. 16 and a crash on Capitol Expressway Oct. 17 that injured three people aboard a small plane that had taken off from Reid-Hillview.\\n\\nThe incidents have renewed concerns in a neighborhood where residents have spent years pushing to close the county-owned airport. The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors voted in 2020 to begin planning for its closure and repurposing of the property, but 2031 is the earliest possible closure date due to federal obligations.\\n\\n“Our families are still waiting for an answer about what happens between now and then,” Dilza Gonzalez, an East San Jose resident and organizer with SOMOS Mayfair, said at the news conference.\\n\\nFor residents who live near the airport, the debate is not just about what happens after the closure, but how to address their concerns in the meantime. Maria Reyes, who has lived in the same home about a block and a half from the airport for 55 years, said she has spent more than two decades advocating for it to close. She’d like to see a community center replace the airport, as well as more green space and places for children to play. The airport covers approximately 179 acres.\\n\\nReyes and Gonzalez raised the issue of the airport’s potential negative health effects, including aircraft noise and lead exposure. Santa Clara County previously restricted the use of leaded aviation fuel at its airports in 2021, following concerns about children’s exposure to lead near Reid-Hillview. Still, Reyes said there are brown clouds due to the continuous airplane traffic.\\n\\n“It’s not just the plane crashes, it’s also the noise,” Reyes told San José Spotlight. “Every two minutes you can hear a plane flying by.”\\n\\nCommunity advocates are also pressing county officials to take immediate steps to protect families while the airport remains operational. A 2022 San José Spotlight analysis of federal data found Reid-Hillview had 11 crashes over the previous decade, though its crash total was not higher than that of some comparable California airports.\\n\\n“2031 is a deadline for closure, not the deadline for protecting our children and families,” Corina Herrera-Loera, an Alum Rock Union School District trustee, said at the news conference.\\n\\nDistrict 2 County Supervisor Betty Duong, who represents East San Jose, said the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the Oct. 17 crash on Capitol Expressway. The county has not received findings from either agency, she said.\\n\\n“If there was something critical that was within the county’s ability to address immediately, the (transportation safety board) would not hesitate to reach out, ” Duong told San José Spotlight.\\n\\nSan Jose State University spokesperson Michelle Smith McDonald said the plane involved in the Oct. 17 crash was owned and operated by Flying20, an independent flying club that includes some university alumni, employees and students but is not operated by SJSU. The university was not aware of anyone affiliated with SJSU being aboard the aircraft.\\n\\nScott Riddle, interim director of Santa Clara County Airports, was not available for comment.\\n\\nMeanwhile, the county has begun the next phase of planning for the airport property’s future. Duong said county officials are finalizing bids to hire a vendor who will develop cost estimates and identify potential barriers and opportunities for projects outlined in the 2020 Reid-Hillview Vision Plan.\\n\\nDuong said her predecessor, former Supervisor Cindy Chavez, earmarked about $300,000 for the process. Residents will continue to provide input, although not every proposed project will move forward.\\n\\nReyes said residents have also experienced health problems they worry may be connected to conditions in the neighborhood such as cancer, depression and other medical issues. After decades of advocating for the airport’s closure, Reyes said residents want county officials to follow through on their commitments.\\n\\nReyes’ concerns come amid broader health disparities affecting Latino residents in Santa Clara County, many of whom live in East San Jose and South County. A 2025 county health assessment documented disparities in areas including mental health and life expectancy, prompting the board of supervisors to declare a public health crisis for Latino residents. The assessment examined broader health needs and did not establish that the airport caused the health problems.\\n\\n“My community doesn’t want promises anymore. We want action,” Reyes said.\\n\\n[email protected] or @CasasPerezRed on X.\\n\\nJoin our mailing list to receive the latest news and updates from our team.\\n\\\"\\\"\\\"\\n\\nFAITHFUL-DERIVATION RULES (hard):\\n- Report ONLY what the source material above supports.
