A 36-year-old San Jose man died and two others sustained injuries in a multi-vehicle collision that occurred on Saturday morning, October 10, 2026, on southbound Highway 101 in San Jose. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the pileup took place around 5:30 a.m. north of Tully Road, involving at least four vehicles and leading to a significant road closure.
CHP officials stated that the 36-year-old San Jose man was driving a red Toyota sedan when it broke down in the traffic lanes. After exiting his vehicle, the man and his car were subsequently struck by both a gray Honda Civic and a white Ford F-150 pickup truck. The San Jose man was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities. His name has not yet been released.
The collision also resulted in injuries to two other individuals. The 39-year-old Hayward man who was driving the Honda sustained major injuries, while the 26-year-old Los Banos man operating a white Tesla Model 3 suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Ford, identified as a 33-year-old San Jose man, was not injured in the incident. Debris from the initial collision flew into the northbound lanes of Highway 101, striking the Tesla.
The drivers of the Honda, Ford, and Tesla all stopped at the scene and remained there following the crash. California Highway Patrol confirmed that none of these drivers were intoxicated. Firefighters responded to the scene shortly after reports of the collision were received, and a coroner representative was called due to the fatality.
The incident transpired on southbound Highway 101 just north of the Tully Road off-ramp, according to CHP reports. The driver of the Ford pickup truck contacted authorities, reporting that they had crashed into at least one vehicle already involved in a prior collision and were trapped inside their vehicle but uninjured. Airbags were deployed in both the pickup truck and the Tesla. All southbound lanes of Highway 101 remained closed for more than one hour after the collision, with motorists being diverted onto Tully Road to bypass the scene. The pickup truck, the Tesla, and the Honda were towed away from the location.
Details regarding the specific cause and manner of the collision were not immediately available from authorities. It was unclear if any other individuals sustained injuries beyond those confirmed by CHP.
