The San Jose Police Department on Friday announced the arrest of two Oakland men connected to a fatal shooting that occurred in downtown San Jose in the early morning hours of May 31. Remote license plate reading cameras were utilized by detectives to identify Cameron Haynes, 21, and Samuel Jordan, 23, as primary suspects in the case. Both men face multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder.
The May 31 incident began at 2:19 a.m. when San Jose patrol officers responded to reports of a shooting in the vicinity of South First Street and East Reed Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a Porsche automobile that had crashed into the front of The Fay apartment tower. Inside the vehicle, they found three men who had sustained injuries.
All three victims were immediately transported to local hospitals for medical treatment. Police reported that one of the victims ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The injuries sustained by the other two victims were later determined to be non-life threatening. Officers determined that two adult males had been struck at least once by gunshots fired into the car, while a third adult male victim was injured during the vehicle's crash into the apartment building.
Investigators believe the shooting itself occurred near the City Center Motel. According to police, unknown suspects fired multiple gunshots before driving away from the scene, prior to the arrival of law enforcement.
Following the discovery, SJPD Homicide Unit Detectives responded to the scene and initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident. During the course of their work, detectives made use of the city's Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras. This technology enabled them to identify Cameron Haynes and Samuel Jordan as the two primary suspects.
On October 8, detectives, with the assistance of San Jose’s Covert Response Unit, successfully located and arrested Samuel Jordan in the city of Oakland. He was subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail. Cameron Haynes was already in custody at the Contra Costa County Jail-Martinez Detention Facility for an unrelated crime at the time of his arrest in connection with this case. Both suspects have been arrested for multiple crimes, including murder and attempted murder.
The motive behind the shooting and the full circumstances surrounding the event remain under investigation by the San Jose Police Department. This incident has been recorded as the city's 10th homicide of 2026.
